Kolar Gold Fields are believed to be the second deepest gold mines of the world.
The Kolar Gold Mines were taken up for systematic exploitation by John Taylor & Sons in the year 1880. The Kolar Gold Mines were handed over to the Government in 1972 and BGMC (now BGML) was formed. Once Kolar Gold Fields were counted as one of the major gold mines in India but now the gold mines are closed down by BGML in 2001 due to reducing deposits and increasing costs.
